Some of you may have noticed that I locked My Twitter account last night. Then My DMs blew up with the usual questions. Why? The answer is simple. Censorship. The next question is what next? That answer is also simple. Its all going behind a paywall. But will social media go up in smoke? Read on. I had a lot to say about censorship and the paywall.
Censorship and the Paywall
When Trump lost his Twitter account last weekend, it was a short-lived triumph. No more than 15 minutes after news of the tyrannical leader’s downfall, the first major suspension occurred in our community. Prominent illustrator Sardax had his account suspended at 33k followers. Days later, Domina Liza from the UK got suspended at 50k. Shortly followed by a German Domina who is a living legend. All accounts were approximately ten years old with between 30-50 thousand followers. I fit right into that demographic. The alarm bells have been sounded!
What happens when someone loses a following they’ve spent years building? One could just go and get a new account and start from ground zero. We have already seen this happen on Instagram, including Me. After five years on Instagram, I lost My account at a measly 20k followers, with no warning. Even though I followed their Terms of Service. No number of appeals have gotten that account back, nor did I try to start a new one. I’ve seen numerous colleagues pour their heart and soul into rebuilding their following, only for their accounts be deleted again.
When that happened to Me in August of 2019, I was on the beach in Vancouver. My last post on Instagram was a beautiful sunset at Wreck Beach. Then I got wiped off the face of the platform. I had a choice. I could have spent the next 48 hours bombarding all My social media platforms to rebuild. But I had not seen My family in a year so instead I chose to spend quality time with them. I also decided it was finally time to go behind a paywall. That’s when I set up an account on AVN Stars.
The days of the Wild West are over
A lot of people say that this is censorship, and it is unfair. I agree to a certain level because it affects Me directly. But at the same time, an account on social media is like having a driver’s license. It is not your right to have one, it’s a privilege. And both can be taken away at any time. Just ask Trump! Like a driver’s licence, if you don’t follow the rules, you get it taken away. Even if the rules are duplicitious and constantly changing.
Facebook and Instagram are well known for their stance on adult content. That is why for most of us content creators, Twitter was like the wild west. It seemed the last place in the free market where adult entertainers could post graphic content AND outbound links. I see many accounts bombarding our timelines with images much more graphic than what I chose to post. But even if I do so in moderation, I am still guilty.
Look at what happened to Pornhub in December. A website with 2.2 BILLION hits a month got taken down. All it took was a right-wing Christian fundamentalist group and a moral crusader at the New York Times. Their “save the children” song and dance is a thinly disguised “war on porn”. And don’t fool yourself, as a consumer you will be directly affected too.
Overnight, Pornhub completely pulled the plug on 80% of their content in a bid to clean up their act. If that can happen on one of the world’s top ten busiest websites, it can certainly happen to a Domina with 50k followers. Locking My account on Twitter was one step in the direction of cleaning up My act. I hope this will save My sexy ass. But as with Pornhub, will My actions be too little too late? Time will tell.
Everything is changing
The hammer of censorship couldn’t have fallen at a worse time. The pandemic has had a rippling effect on the entire world. At a time when most real time sessioning Dominatrices aren’t able to meet their slaves in person, this is a double whammy. But the Darwinian “adapt or die” logic applies here. Most of us have made the transition to online. And the concept of the paywall is more prominent than ever.
If pornography becomes less readily available that suits Me fine. Pornhub’s decision to remove all unverified content means less piracy. Their move will eventually have a trickle down effect on other tube sites. That is some karma right there. The sites that actively built their platforms on piracy will now have to clean their acts up or cease to exist. All the better for the independent content producer.
I am quite happy to reserve the best of what I produce behind a paywall for those who appreciate what I do personally. Rather than be just another Femdom countless followers scroll past when they want to get their free kicks. After all, the Dominatrix is the unobtainable woman. So why should we be expected to give it away for free? The days of free porn will slowly end with the pandemic. Maybe censorship is the vaccine we’ve been waiting for…
What can you do?
Times are a changing. It’s all going behind a paywall. So if you’re a consumer of Femdom content, you’re going to have to get used to it. Those social media accounts you used to enjoy following for free with their outrageously explicit content will disappear day by day. Some will chose to bounce back, others won’t. It used to be “did you see what so and so did on Twitter”. But I’m afraid the conversation will soon become “did you see so and so lost their account”.
The easiest thing you could do to support your favourite Dominas and other content creators is sign up to their newsletters if they have one. This is the most definite way of staying in touch as no one can take a mailing list away. In saying that, email marketing platforms are more volatile than social media. But if your favourite Femdom has a mailing list, sign up! That way if someone loses their social media account, you’ll still have a way to stay in touch.
